Souls are very tempting to purchase especially when the going gets tough, but you can earn more of them without having to spend a dime. Get three stars on normal stages for a large bonus, and beat the challenge modes for more big bonuses. These bonuses add up to over 1,000 souls apiece. Even without three stars, and even when you lose at a challenge stage, you’ll still earn enough souls that you can reasonably grind for more of them.

Sometimes, the need for more souls can be remedied simply by improving your strategy. Mix up your assortment of gods. Use the single target, high damage gods against big enemies, and use the splash damage gods (such as Apollo and Zeus) against large swarms of little enemies. Use Artemis against flyers (and in the back row, since she fires long distance arrows). Use the temples and other stage effects to your advantage (such as bomb sheep and automatons).
Don’t bother purchasing power ups, either. Save your power ups for when you really need them, such as challenge stages and bosses. Replay old stages over and over again – random enemies very often drop more power ups for free. The power ups are dropped completely randomly. Some stages you might not earn any power ups at all, while you might earn multiple power ups on other play-throughs of the same stages.
The only thing that you really need to spend more money on if you want it, that you can’t earn in the game, is heroes, because your only free hero is Hercules. Use your upgrades to power him up, instead, so that he not only gains power, but eventually becomes just as powerful, if not moreso, than the premium heroes that you have to spend real money on.
Keep experimenting to find the best ways to win. You can even beat the bosses with three stars with no power ups, or at least no money spent. Use the gods’ temples to stop the boss’s attacks in order to finish the stage without losing any hearts.
