The way to get further down is to upgrade your equipment to higher experience levels, and the way get higher-level equipment is to upgrade your blacksmith. Upgrade the blacksmith quickly but not too quickly so that you can still afford whatever equipment he’s selling. With each upgrade, the equipment costs more but it’s worth it because it’s more effective.
Cash is earned in the game, and can be used to upgrade your equipment. Focus on your rarest equipment, since it’s very easy to get less-rare equipment at higher levels throughout the game. You’ll need all east 150 cash for most of them, so play until you load up on enough cash and then go for the upgrades.
Drill through the middle of the stage when possible, and try to stay away from drilling individual ores and gems. Look for the explosive squares and the auto-jackhammer squares; let them do their thing, then collect whatever is left behind in the aftermath. Explosives can also get rid of enemies quickly as well.
The more levels you complete, the further down you will have to dig in order to complete the level. The further down that you dig, the rarer the gems that you’ll find; larger ones will appear often as well. These will earn you more cash per pop.
Once you beat all of the main depth quests in a specific area, you’ll be able to replay it and go an endless distance for maximum cash. This will afford you lots of opportunities to max out on your cash, upgrade your cards and equipment as high as you can, and make it even further in the brand new stages.
