Pokémon GO – How to get free Pokécoins (Gold Coins)

Pokémon GO needs no introduction by now, having already taken the world and social media by storm. You need plenty of different items in this game, and whenever you run out of them, having Pokécoins allows you to get more without having to go out to a Pokéstop to hunt for more items. Coins can normally purchased within the app, but they can be found for free as well. Read on for some tips on how to get free coins in Pokémon GO!

Right from the beginning of the game, you have 100 coins, but you also have to spend them on Poké balls as a part of the tutorial. From then on the game doesn’t tell you anything about how to get more Pokécoins, nor does it tell you that you even can earn them within the game. All that it tells you is that you can purchase more of them from the store.

The way to get free coins is to have a Pokémon stationed at one of your team’s gyms to defend it. You can defend up to 10 gyms at a time, and each one that you defend will earn you 10 coins every 21 hours. You just have to go to the Pokéshop in order to claim your haul.

You don’t even need to have been the one to claim the gym from the other team, or to have taken over the gym in the first place. As long as you have a high enough CP to claim a place as a gym trainer, you will be good to go to leave a Pokemon there. One of your best bets is to leave stronger Pokemon to defend the gym, or to take over a gym in an extremely remote area that people don’t go that often to.

The easiest trick is to look around for a gym that belongs to your team, especially a gym that is already at a very high level. Oftentimes, the high level gyms will have open spots for trainers. You’ll know because when you tap on the gym and the pop up appears, the icon in the bottom left corner will appear that looks like a Poke ball with a plus sign next to it. This even shows up if you are not close to the gym, although you can’t tap it unless you are close to the gym.

You can get the 10-coin bonus for up to nine gyms at a time, totaling up to 90 coins every 21 hours. Beyond that, you can still station more Pokémon at gyms, but you won’t earn any coin bonuses for anything after the 9 Pokémon at gyms. It’s still good to station more than 9 at gyms, if you can, so that you have a backup ready in case gyms get taken over before you get the chance to collect your bonus.
