First thing’s first, and that is that you can do the time lapse cheat on the iOS and Android versions of the game to refill your lives automatically. Once you lose a life you normally have to wait 30 minutes for it to come back, but set the time ahead on your phone and you will be able to get all of your hearts back right away, as long as you set it ahead half an hour per life lost.
One of the main changes to the game is that there are two new special combo pieces. One is that if you make a 2×2 square of the same colors, they will clear out and a fish of that color will appear on the board. The other is that if you make a T-shape consisting of 5 square across, 3 squares down, all in the same single combo (or 3 across and 5 down), you will earn a swirly hard candy that, when matched, transforms almost all of the pieces on the board into its given color.

So what do these do when combined with other pieces? Combining the swirly candy with any other special piece (fish, wrapped candy bomb, striped candy, sprinkle candy) turns almost every piece on the board into that candy, then blows them up, which causes almost every piece to turn into the other special candy in the combo. In the case of wrapped candies and striped candies being part of the combo, this will destroy the entire board multiple times and will make it nearly impossible not to get a high score.
As far as the fish goes, if you mix a fish with another special candy, it will become a fish version of said candy, and it will still home in on whatever you need to get rid of in order to move onto the next level. Mix a fish with a sprinkle candy and it will turn all of the specified color into fish.
Most of the time when you need to get past a difficult stage that you’ve been stuck on for weeks, the best strategy is to try to go for broke and make a combination of two of the special pieces. Not two stripes – go for either a stripe and a bomb, a sprinkle mixed with anything else, or a swirly candy mixed with anything else for the best effect.
