You should first master how to win a game without using your superpowers. As you get higher in the rankings, though, the rounds get tougher, so you will need to use your superpowers, especially as more players user their own superpowers against you. Practice with your superpowers and use them against your opponents. Do this, and your opponents will end up with a much smaller chance of winning and a much higher chance of losing.
As you win you will not only gain levels, but you will win prizes. The prizes tend to consist of cards to either unlock or level up a piece of equipment. Equipment can boost your statistics, even outside of superpowers.

Save up these coins, combined with the coins that you earn by winning matches against other players, and you will be able to earn goodies such as costume packs (which cost 3,500 points apiece).
The powers area is where you want to be if you want to make it easier to win against other players. If you see an up arrow there, go there, because that means that you have at least one special power that is eligible to be upgraded. Keep earning more gold coins and more diamonds and more upgrades will become available to you.
