Seen here are the first official pictures of the all new 2012/2013 Audi S7 Sportback, the hotted-up version of Audi’s hatchback coupe sedan hermaphrodite that has taken Audi’s exterior design to whole new levels.
The S7 Sportback shares an engine with the new S6 lineup, meaning that it will receive a 4.0 liter turbocharged v8 packing 420 horsepower and 410 lb-feet of torque. The 0-60 time comes in a very respectable 4.9 seconds and fuel economy is estimated at a very impressive average of 24 MPG.
The S7 Sportback will come with one single transmission option, a 7-speed S-tronic dual clutch, so for those who wanted a manual transmission option (the 2 or 3 of you out there), you are out of luck. Quattro all wheel drive will put the power down to all 4 wheels, and an option will be there for a sport differential which transfers power variably between the wheels depending on which wheels need it the most, in order to improve handling greatly. Carbon fiber-ceramic brakes will also be an option.
The suspension will be air-based, as most of Audi’s upper echelon models are, and it will have a selector knob allowing the driver to adjust the bias toward comfort, sport, or somewhere in between. Expect the S7 to generally be tuned more towards sportiness than the A7 is.
This variant of the A7 model line will compete against the Porsche Panamera Turbo, the BMW 650i Gran Coupe, and the Mercedes-Benz CLS550. Compared to the competition, its weight will be lighter and its power will be less. The light weight comes courtesy of hybrid aluminum construction by Audi, which should make it feel much more nimble than its competition.
Interiorwise, the overall design will be sported up to fit with the character of the S7. Expect quilted leather seats for a little extra bit of style, as seen in this picture.
No pricing has been announced yet, but if you have to ask. This model won’t come cheap, but it should be worth the money.
