Pokémon GO: How to get Meltan, Melmetal, and Mystery Boxes

Pokémon GO had its first Pokémon debut in September 2018, when Dittos disguised as Meltans popped up everywhere, tricking many a Pokémon GO player into thinking that it was a glitch. As we know now, Meltan is a brand new Pokémon, a mythical one, and now we know that it can evolve into Melmetal, which is both a mystical and a legendary Pokémon. You need Mystery Boxes to get both of them. Read on to find out how to get Mystery Boxes, Meltan, and Melmetal in Pokémon GO!

First, how to get the Mystery Box. In order to get a Mystery Box, you will need to transfer a Pokémon from Pokémon GO to Pokémon Let’s Go for the Nintendo Switch. There are the Eevee and Pikachu versions of this game; either one of them can accept transfers. When you execute the transfer from GO to Let’s Go, a Mystery Box will be awarded to you in Pokémon GO.

When you do this, you will be awarded with a Mystery Box in Pokémon GO. Using this is similar to using a lure, where it lasts for thirty minutes, and when you do use it, Meltan will be let out and will be able to be caught in the wild. Catch all of the Meltan that you can in this time; once the box’s time period ends, you won’t be able to catch anymore of them.

That’s how you catch a Meltan, but Melmetal is far more complicated. You need 400 Meltan candy in order to evolve Meltan into Melmetal. So before you use the Mystery Box, hit every Pokestop that you can find, and build up a gigantic collection of Pinap Berries. Those berries increase the candies that you earn from catching a Pokemon, so using them will enable you to load up on candies faster.

Once the Mystery Box time ends, you won’t be able to get Meltan candies until you use another Mystery Box, unless you set a Meltan as your buddy. Set it as your buddy, then walk around or bike around as much as possible in order to earn Meltan candies. You need to keep it under 15 MPH to earn candies and not be flagged as playing while driving. Get used to lots of running and biking to get all 400 of these candies.

Once you earn 400 candies, take your strongest, highest-IV Meltan and evolve it into Melmetal. Melmetal is a pure steel Pokemon, and is extremely powerful. Once you have either a Meltan or a Melmetal in Pokemon GO, you can transfer them over to Pokemon Let’s Go. This is the only way to earn either of those two Pokemon in Pokemon Let’s Go.
