As you keep unlocking troops, you’ll end up with new strategies that you can put into play. Rams, for example, will allow you to get through walls much more quickly since they’ll instantly destroy any walls that they ram. Commanders will command all of your troops to attack defensive buildings (although Ninjas will just keep attacking resource buildings). Archers can just shoot over walls, which nullifies any player’s attempt at walling off almost any of their buildings.

Once you unlock Oni Trolls and Essence Masters, they will make it so that you barely have to use any strategy at all because they are nearly indestructible. Oni Trolls do large quantities of damage at short range, while Essence Masters do high amounts of damage at a long range. Maidens are a healing troop that you unlock, and they will simply heal any of your other troops that you send into battle. Maidens and Commanders, combined, will focus the fight on the defensive units and prevent your troops from getting killed, all at the same time.
Upgrade your troops even further with a Blacksmith (which allows you to upgrade everybody except Maidens and Essence Masters) and the Ancient Temple (which allows you to upgrade Maidens and Essence Masters). The Scroll Statue can give you spells which damage or freeze enemy buildings, which adds an even bigger element of strategy to your battles. The Scroll Statue can also be upgraded by your Ancient Temple. Mercenary Camps will simply give you free bonus troops for two days.
Leave a hole or two in your wall, and fill the holes with traps, in order to knock off enemy troops very quickly (with bomb traps) or to freeze them, making them easy fodder for your cannons and archer towers (for the freeze traps). Make sure to rebuild the traps as soon as they are used up, though. Use the freeze tower for the same purpose as the freeze trap, except with range. The chain lightning tower will send lightning to attack multiple troops at once, and large troops will take bonus damage.
Drum Guns and Jade Lions are the ultimate defensive buildings. Once you build a Jade Lion, start building some lions out of the decorations area of your store, because they look exactly the same, thus confusing other players as to which is the real lion and which is the fake lion.
