What you are looking at are the first spy shots of the all new, 2012 Audi S3, which has shown its face for the first time in hatchback form.
This particular model is the three door variation on the S3, meaning that chances are slim to none that this model will come to America; however, there will be five door and four door sedan variants of the Audi S3, and while the five door is currently unconfirmed for a return to the US market, the four door has already been officially confirmed as a new release on our soil.
Analyzing the new shape of the Audi S3, the hatchback appears to take on a more rounded appearance in keeping with some of Audi’s recent designs. As well, it sits lower and has a much sportier stance, putting it in perfect competition against the BMW 1-series (and 2-series as it will be known fairly shortly). This also has a much cleaner, sportier look than the new Mercedes-Benz A-class, which has been criticized as being overly creased and done-up, and a bit cheap looking.
Enginewise, expect a turbocharged 2.0T, a variant of the same mill that sees duty in the Volkswagen Golf R, except possibly with up to 280 horsepower when it arrives in the S3. The previous S3 had 265 horsepower, but the new S3 is expected to follow the Volkswagen Group’s general model trend and drop significant amounts of weight, making the 280 horsepower feel much more powerful in the all new S3. Of course, expect Quattro all wheel drive to push the force down to all four corners, and expect both a six-speed manual and an eight speed dual clutch automatic gearbox.
The A3 and the S3 are expected to skip out on the Frankfurt Motor Show, which begins tomorrow; however, expect a debut at the 2012 Geneva Auto Show sometime next March.
