In addition to the new characters, you can also purchase power ups for the beginning of the level using a small amount of helix. You can either get a head start, a helix magnet for the fall down off of the tower, or a boost to slow down time. The magnet is the cheapest and possibly the one that is the easiest to make a profit from it, especially if you can build really long towers.
