Distance, of course, will add to your score greatly. To go the farthest distance and get the most airtime, keep aiming one platform BELOW the next one until you see one that looks a little bit dangerous, then land on it. Go too long without landing, of course, and you’ll fall off the stage, but find the right balance to get easy high scores.
Gems will allow you to unlock new balls. You can earn gems from inside the level itself, but if you want to get the most possible gems, your best bet is to go to the ball store and watch the video from the video offer. Each video will earn you 50 gems, and you can watch as many of them as you want.

When you unlock a new ball, it won’t change the gameplay at all, it will merely change the appearance of the ball when you select it. Some balls require you to do something else other than spend gems in order to unlock them. You’ll have to interact via social media to get these balls, but even if you hit the “cancel” button at the prompt after tapping on the ball, you will still get the ball.
Various challenges in the game present a way to earn gems other than watching the ad videos. Usually they will consist of distance or airtime challenges. Complete these challenges to earn free gems, and then use the gems to unlock even more balls.
