Each time you get hit with a bullet, you lose some of your armor. You can tell how much armor you have left by how much clothing is left on your hero. When he still has his full equipment, he is at full armor. Gradually he will lose his cigar, his helmet, his jacket and his shirt if he gets shot – when he’s shirtless, that means one more hit will probably kill you. Armor can be restored by picking up armor drops from civilians who have been rescued.
Mayhem is basically the “points” you earn for each level, and depending on how much mayhem you earn, you get awarded one, two or three stars per level. Mayhem is earned by how much damage you do to an enemy (the orange number) and how many bonus multipliers you pick up (the blue numebr). To maximize the orange number, shoot as many enemies as you can in close succession, and shoot them even after they are dead too, as they will still earn you points. Shoot chickens, too, because they also earn you Mayhem points and enable you to keep combos going even when you are in between stage segments. Oh, and don’t forget to shoot the red ninjas when you see them pop out, as they will earn you more mayhem AND extra coins. Be quick, through, because they disappear just as quickly as they appear.
While most stage segments are stationary, some of them will be “running stages”, where you run and shoot and jump while enemies fire at you. These are tough, but you can jump by pressing on the screen with two fingers at the same time.
There are many ways to earn free coins. Each stage has three different objectives to complete – these are such things such as “kill 50 enemies” or “knock 5 hats off of enemies”. Completing one of these objectives earns you 50 coins, and when you complete them, new objectives will be swapped in at the next stage. You can get 50 more free coins at the end of every level by tapping the Facebook or Twitter share buttons and sharing your accomplishments, as well. Lastly, you can earn free coins at the end of every level by completing various “accomplishments”. These are good for every level and can be viewed at any time by hitting the trophy icon. Any new mission that you complete earns you anywhere from 50 to over 200 bonus coins.
