Battles happen automatically in this game; your characters will do all of their attacks and skills on their own. Your role in the battle is to build the best team possible. Make sure that the rarest heroes are in your party, upgrade them as much as possible, and give them all Equipment to fill all of the equipment slots. You have four equipment slots, but you can unlock a fifth one when you upgrade them to level 100, and a sixth one when you promote them to legendary plus.
To speed battles along, you also have the option to double the speed of the battle, as well as to just skip the battle. Skipping battles will always be available unless you are fighting a boss; boss battles cannot be skipped unless you are going back and fighting them again.

Diamonds are the premium currency of the game; the quickest way to get a lot of them is to purchase them, but you can earn a ton of diamonds for free, especially by playing save the dog. You get free diamonds each time you complete a puzzle, and after completing five or 10 puzzles, you also will often get free hero summons, Allowing you to earn new heroes and to promote the heroes that you already have.
The faster that you get through campaign battles, the faster you will unlock new content in the game. Not only will you find new heroes, but you can unlock the arena mode, where you can battle against other players, as well as a multitude of other game modes, and you will find that the battles get more and more challenging as you progress further and further into the game.
The farther you go in the game, the more game modes you unlock. These include Pandora’s Domain, The Learning Hub, and Rankings in the Home area, as well as the Abyss Vault, Arena, Sky Tower, Colosseum, World Exploration, Hunting War, Lost Land, and Hero’s Bond in the Adventure area, plus the ability to join or form an alliance. All of these modes are different, all of them have different sorts of rare rewards, and all of them are made available as you get further in.
